President Tinubu Approves Upgrade of 16 Teaching Hospitals Across Nigeria

Lagos. February 16. 2024. President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of key health infrastructure and equipment across all six geo-political zones in line with his administration’s vision of overhauling the health and social welfare sector.

 

Upgrading health infrastructure is a top priority of President Tinubu’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) will carry out comprehensive upgrades to improve broad-based access to high-quality healthcare nationwide. 

 

The following teaching hospitals in the geo-political zones listed will establish oncology and nuclear medicine centers to ensure world-class cancer diagnosis and care is accessible across Nigeria:

 

South South:

- University of Benin Teaching Hospital

 

North West:  

- Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital

 

South East:

- University of Nigeria (Nsukka) Teaching Hospital 

 

North West: 

- Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina

 

North Central:

- University of Jos Teaching Hospital

 

South West:

- Lagos University Teaching Hospital

 

Additionally, critical service expansions will occur at the following 10 hospitals across all geo-political zones:
 

  • Reference Hospital, Kaduna (North West)
  • Medical Diagnostic Centre Complex, Enugu (South East)  
  • Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto (North West)
  • University College Hospital, Ibadan (South West)
  • University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (South South)
  • Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi (North East)
  • Federal Medical Centre, Asaba (South South)
  • Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre Complex, Ilorin (North Central)  
  • Jos University Teaching Hospital (North Central)
  • Federal Medical Centre, Nguru (North East)

 

These projects aim to upgrade facilities over the next 12-18 months. Goals include improving screening and diagnosis for various diseases, reducing mortality rates, creating more healthcare jobs and building staff capacity through training. Overall the investments align with Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda for strengthening the country's healthcare system and outcomes.

 

President Tinubu's investment demonstrates his commitment to strengthening Nigeria's healthcare system and ensuring top-quality medical care is available to all citizens, regardless of location. The infrastructure upgrades will save lives and establish Nigeria as a leader in healthcare access across Africa.
