Mystery vaping illness linked to sixth death

While US health officials have identified and are investigating some 450 possible cases in 33 states of a mysterious lung related illness associated with vaping, Kansas health officials are expressing alarm for the health and safety of Kansans who are using vaping products and urge them to stop until the cause of vaping related lung injuries and death can be determined.

Authorities in Kansas said that an individual in their 50’s was the first person to die in the state and the sixth across the United States from vaping associated causes, and the person had a history of underlying health problems. Detailed information is unavailable so far on what types of products were used by the deceased.

In a statement, the Kansas health department added: “The national investigation has not identified any specific vaping or e-cigarette products linked to all cases. Many patients report using products with liquids that contain cannabinoid products, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis, and other intoxicating active ingredient”.

There have been six reports of illnesses linked to vaping in Kansas so far, with three confirmed or probable.
