How Late-Night Eating Impacts Your Heart and Waistline

It is 11 p.m. The house is finally quiet. The children are asleep, the generator has settled into its steady hum, and you curled up on the sofa with a plate of jollof rice and chicken, and a cold glass of juice beside you, catching up on your favourite show before bed. For many Africans working two jobs, running a business on the side, or simply enjoying the cooler, quieter hours of the night, this scene repeats itself several times a week.
New research suggests that late night eating may be doing more to your body than you realise. A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition has found that people who naturally prefer late nights, so-called “night owls,” tend to eat very little in the morning and load up on calories, carbohydrates, and fat late at night. Over time, this pattern is linked to a higher waistline, poorer blood sugar control, and an unhealthier heart profile.
This blog breaks down what the study found, how late-night eating affects your body the way it does, and what it means for the millions of Africans whose lives, jobs, and culture often keep them up long after sunset.
The study was led by researchers from universities in New Zealand and Australia. It was published in July 2026 in Frontier in Nutrition, a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Researchers followed 287 healthy women aged 18 to 45, living in Auckland, New Zealand, from both European and Pacific Island backgrounds. Each woman filled in a detailed sleep questionnaire that classified her as a “morning type” (early bird), an “evening type” (night owl), or somewhere in between (intermediate type). About a third of the women turned out to be night owls.

This combination allowed the team to look beyond simple body weight and examine body composition and blood chemistry in real detail, giving a much clearer picture of metabolic health than body mass index (BMI) alone.
The most striking discovery was this: night owls and early birds ate roughly the same total number of calories each day. The real difference was not how much they ate, but when.
Early birds and intermediate types ate most of their calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat before 10 a.m. Night owls, on the other hand, ate very little in the early morning and made up for it by consuming significantly more energy, carbohydrates, and fat between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m.
This late-night eating pattern was linked to several worrying markers:
Professor Rozanne Kruger, one of the study authors, explained that chronotype shapes not just when people sleep, but also their food choices, habits, and metabolism. As she put it, both morning types and evening types consume similar amounts of food overall, but the timing of eating made the crucial difference. Her team’s message was clear: targeting when people eat, and cutting back on late-night meals, could be an important strategy for improving health among people with an evening chronotype.
Your body runs on an internal clock, called the circadian rhythm that tells your organs when to be active and when to rest. This clock does not just control sleep, it also manages digestion, blood sugar, and how your body stores or burns fat.
During the day, your body is naturally better at handling food. Insulin works more efficiently, blood sugar is processed faster, and the body is primed to burn calories for energy.
At night, the body shifts into a different mode; it prepares for rest, digestion slows down, and any excess calories are more likely to be stored as fat rather than used for energy.
When someone eats a large meal close to bedtime, they are essentially feeding their body at a time when it is biologically prepared to store, not burn. Over weeks and months, this mismatch between eating time and body clock can contribute to weight gain, higher blood sugar, and a poorer cholesterol profile, exactly what this study found in the night owl group.
There is another piece to this puzzle: skipping breakfast. Many night owls eat little or nothing in the morning, which can increase hunger late in the day and lead to overeating or snacking late at night. This creates a cycle that is difficult to break without a deliberate change in habits.
As with any single piece of research, this study has some limitations worth keeping in mind.
First, the participants were all women living in New Zealand, from European and Pacific backgrounds. The findings may not apply in the same way to men, to other age groups, or to people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including Africans.
Second, the study relied on self-reported food diaries and sleep questionnaires, which can sometimes be inaccurate, particularly for people with less structured eating patterns, a group that may include many night owls.
Third, this was an observational study, meaning it shows a strong link between late-night eating and poorer health markers, but is cannot fully prove that eating late is the direct cause of the problem. Other lifestyle habits common among night owls, such as poorer sleep quality or less physical activity, may also play a role.
Finally, the researchers themselves noted that ethnicity and chronotype overlapped closely in their sample, which make it hard to separate the effects of body clock timing from cultural and dietary differences. More research is needed, especially in diverse populations, before firm conclusions can be drawn for everyone.
Late nights are woven into daily life across much urban African. From Lagos to Nairobi, Accra to Kampala, many people work long hours, commute for hours in traffic, or run side businesses that keep them awake well past midnight. Add to this the popularity of late-night social gatherings, religion-tied night vigils, and the habit of eating a heavy meal after returning home from work, and it becomes clear why this research matters to Africans.
Many African households traditionally serve their largest, most calories-dense meal in the evening, sometimes quite late, after the day’s work is done. Pounded yam with rich soup, jollof rice with fried chicken or fish, or a heavy plate of amala and gbegiri eaten at 9 or 10 p.m. is familiar scene in many Nigerian homes. This study suggests that shifting a larger share of daily calories earlier in the day, and lightening the evening meal, could support better metabolic health over time, particularly for people who identify as night owls.
This is especially relevant given the rising rate of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease across the African continent. Non-communicable diseases are increasingly recognised as a major public health concern in Nigeria and much of sub-Saharan Africa, and meal timing is an affordable, practical factor that individuals and families can adjust without needing expensive interventions.
Conclusion
This study adds to a growing body of evidence, known as “chrononutrition,” showing that meal timing is a powerful and often overlooked factor in metabolic health. For Africans navigating busy, late-running days, the takeaway is practical rather than restrictive:
Small, gradual changes, such as moving dinner earlier by 30 to 60 minutes, or having a modest breakfast even on busy mornings, can help realign eating habits with the body’s natural rhythm. It is not just what you eat that matters for your heart and waistline; when you eat matters too. Loading most of your calories into the late evening and night, especially carbohydrates and fatty foods, is linked to higher body fat, poorer blood sugar control, and a less favourable cholesterol profile, even if your total daily calories intake is normal.
